IRAQ: Aussie Companies Snare $1.9 Billion in Contracts

ABOUT 20 Australian companies have won contracts worth $1.9 billion to help rebuild Iraq.

Online Stock Market Trading Despite security concerns and US domination of the process, Patrick Corporation, ANZ Bank and Woodside Petroleum have undertaken projects in Iraq since Saddam Hussein's regime was toppled in 2003.

UK firms could secure a "significant proportion" of new contracts to help rebuild Iraq, a government minister has told company bosses. Industry must "play its full part" in the reconstruction of the country, said trade minister Mike O'Brien. Company executives were given a chance to meet the man overseeing the distribution of $18.6bn (11.14bn) of US money. This follows the US government's pledge for greater transparency in awarding new contracts to rebuild Iraq.

Stock Investing Course Austrade is refusing to release the identity of all Australian companies with reconstruction work, claiming many want details kept secret for security reasons. But last year, the Federal Government was more willing to reveal the identities of the companies.

"Experts try to put price tag on Iraq war" (Sept. 19) tells us that a U.S. attack would cost the country $50 billion to $200 billion. This would come from citizens' taxes. It represents funds that will not be used for schools, consumer protections, environmental protections, public broadcasting, health care, housing and other vital programs.

Stock Market Game In a speech, Trade Minister Mark Vaile named eight of them.

Stock Investing Game Engineering firm Worley Group has the most lucrative contract.

nearly all based in the United States, Britain and other Western countries. As the largest security firm operating in Iraq, much of that rage has been directed at Blackwater, which protects U.S. diplomats as they move about on Baghdad's dangerous streets. An Iraqi investigation into the Sept. 16 killings recommended that the State Department sever all contracts for the company's operations in Iraq within six months.

Journal Prime Rate Street Wall Worley is in partnership with US company Parsons in a contract worth up to $1 billion to rebuild oil infrastructure in northern Iraq.

The allegations mainly involve the Army's secret, dollar contract for oilfield repairs in Iraq to Halliburton, based company. The objections were raised publicly last year by Bunnatine Greenhouse, then the chief contracts monitor at the Army Corps of Engineers, the government agency that handled the contract and several others in Iraq.

Stock Market News Most Australian companies are getting work by winning subcontracts from giant US corporations that have been awarded the bulk of reconstruction projects. This has been paid for by $US18.4 billion ($A24.5 billion) from the US Government.

Stock Investing Basics Not all Australian companies have had positive experiences in Iraq. Queensland caterer Morris Corporation had a $100 million contract to supply food to the US military and even supplied a Thanksgiving meal for US President George Bush when he made a surprise visit to Iraq in 2003.

Stock Investing Software But Halliburton subsidiary Kellogg Brown & Root, which awarded the subcontract to Morris, took the work away, claiming Morris had not met its obligations.

Stock Market Trading A messy legal battle followed and allegations were made that a Halliburton employee demanded $3 million in kickbacks from Morris.

Stock Investing For Dummy Wheat exporter AWB, whose most recent contract with Iraq was worth more than $350 million, has also become embroiled in controversy after it was found to have paid $300 million in kickbacks to Saddam's regime through the United Nation's oil-for-food program.

Stock Market Crash Australia exported $383 million in goods to Iraq last financial year, including grains, cheese, meat, passenger vehicles and communications systems, with 37 Australian companies achieving export deals.

Stock Investing Tip Austrade is co-ordinating an Australian stand at the Rebuild Iraq 2006 trade exhibition in Amman, Jordan, in April. Many Australian companies are expected to attend.
