Tennis season ends

The Luther men's tennis team ended the season with a second place finish in the Iowa Inter-collegiate Athletic Conference Championships last weekend. This is the second year in a row the Norse have fallen to nationally ranked Coe College in the IIAC championship match.


The Norse swept Loras College in first round play on Thursday 4-0. Adam Strand ('04) easily defeated Loras' Adam Atkins 6-1, 6-0. Pete Tass ('04) routed his opponent Kris Stallman just as easily, 6-0, 6-1. Randy Mack ('03) also cruised in straight sets against Mark Goedken without losing a game. Luther's streak did not stop there. Scott Rheinschmidt ('04) beat Tom Giovingo 6-1, 6-0 to give the Norse their fourth win.

The semifinal match went just as smoothly for the Norse, who posted up a 5-0 shutout against Central. Arvid von Taube ('03) won two out of three sets over Nick Cochrane, while Eric Guffy ('03) continued in the second match winning two out of three over the Dutch's Aaron Enderlin. Mack again won both of his sets against Tim Vaske 6-0, 7-6. Rheinschmidt rounded off the shutout in two sets, beating Adam Ruggle 6-3, 6-4.

The Norse struggled in the championship match against top-seeded Coe, losing 4-0. The IIAC MVP Nick Barnes knocked off Luther's Marcin Niewiadomski ('05) 6-0, 6-1. Strand dropped two sets to Adam Elliot, along with Tass losing in straight sets to Andrew Mikkila.

Coach Brian Huinker could not be reached for his thoughts on this weekend and the rest of the season, as the Norse finished the season with an overall record of 19-9 and a conference record of 7-1.
